Update - The good news is the contracts are exchanged, which came as a surprise yesterday. My Wife had been having to send a daily email to the solicitor along the lines of 'I agree to exchange contracts today'

That is good news, I know how that feels. You have to keep on at solicitors, it is the only way.

Do what the solicitors do back at them - start charging them for phone calls and for your time in 1/10th of an hour increments and tell tnem you're doing so. They soon behave.
