Bought my 10y/o his first Warhammer set at Christmas from the Games Workshop in Oxford. What a great bunch! The lad's really into making stuff, we've done Airfix kits and he makes tons of toys and stuff from cardboard and sellotape as well as playing with Lego.
I figured that Warhammer would take him to another level as well as get into some gaming as opposed to COD/computer games. We've had a starter session at the shop and now we've put the kits together (Space-marines and Orks) and starting the painting.

Anyone else dabbled with this stuff?

Some of my mates at school were into it. That's going back a few years now. I played a few times and t was fun (very time consuming though). The big restriction for me was money. It would have been hugely expensive to build a big army and you need friends who are into it too. It might be different now though. They wee all lead then. One of my mates did GCSE and A level art and some of the models he painted were pretty spectacular.

Shouldn't your son be building bikes instead ;)

I did years ago, stopped when they changed over to plastic and started charging more for things that would brake easily. Scaven is the way forward.

Oh and they started to bring new rule books out each year, so you were paying out more money each time.

You will find that the local shop will have introductory games on at the shop to introduce kids to the game.

On the plus side, it will help him with his maths and socialising.

I was into it when I was about 13, my brother is into it at the moment.
Good fun but horribly expensive, and pretty geeky if he is still into it when he is older

My son was heavily into warhammer a number of years ago, going to Edinburgh every week to whatever it is they did in the warhammer shop across there.

We even had to buy a cupboard especially for the stuff, which is all still there ;)

I put a stop to him though, spray painting it, in the garage next to my TVR

Played Dungeons and Dragons and Tunnels and Trolls in my early teens, using a character named Yog Orcslayer . It was great fun, and definitely makes you use your brain and imagination in a way computer gaming doesn't.

I had boxed sets of carefully painted Citadel metal figures which I eventually sold a few years on eBay. Had some interesting email exchanges during sales as apparently lady gamers were quite unusual ;)

Used to love it as a lad, I was the only one in the entire school though at the time it seems. My mother sold the lot down the car boot for a couple of quid, told my workmate who is still into it despite being in his 30s and he went "Nooooooo..!! Those figures were worth a fortune..!!" ;)

It's great when your parents do that kind of thing ;) I was genuinely shocked how much people were bidding for mine on eBay, especially for the dragon eggs! At least they went to good homes...

Wow. I could echo most of the above!

Got into it (and a few other Paper RPGS) at school due to a due to a few friends. Figures were too expensive for me but it was all great fun. I didnt really have any armies of my own but would help my friends with the painting (and the playing ofc).

<wind on 10-15 years>

A few years back when "Dawn Of War" came to the PC I mentioned about getting some figures as ornaments/collectables. Maybe a Chaos Defiler or a Dreadnought or two... Guess what I got that Christmas? ;)

Alas all my friends that used to play it have all moved out and had their collections sold by parents. They WOULD have been worth a fortune!

Anyway. I still have 90% of the painting to complete! If only I had the time.

Not to sure?
My 13 year old lad is into it......and I thought cycling was expensive!!!!!!

Injection moulded figures, that cost a fortune and they are not even painted either!

Having said that, his grandma bought him a Xbox 360 for Christmas and of course he wanted to connect it to 'tinternet, so that was another £100+ quid spent yesterday. ;)

Seems like I'm in good company!
I've never been a Dungeons & Dragons kinda person so I've got a lot to learn regarding gaming and terminology, but I enjoy the making of the pieces, it's kinda therapeutic.

Ahh, Warhammer. Who needs real life when you can find all the excitement you could ever need in one-inch high plastic figures and the faint whiff of BO.

Faint whiff? The stench of BO still clings to my nasal hair like a parasite from a few "gaming" sessions about 6/7 years ago!
