Wow - what knowledgeable & helpful fellows you are! Many thanks all. (Have to say I particularly like the box above as a starting point...add a few experiments with the previously-suggested black/dark backgrounds and I think we could be onto a winner!)

It really depends what you are trying to achieve. You need contrast in the image this grabs attention, but not a distracting background.
You need to make sure the glass is totally clean and dust free, you need to be able to get in close so the subject fills the frame, watch the reflections, and as for equipment, well the window sill a couple of reflectors peace's of card, remember you will be so close that most other stuff will be out of focus, tripod is good so things don't move

I will add that the bike doesn't look anywhere near as shiney in real life...it's all a trick of the light ;)
