Anyone replaced an ipod screen?

My daughter has trashed the screen of her ipad. Googling suggests two options - DIY, very fiddly and difficult, and getting it done, costly but presumably more reliable. Has anyone done either, and with what results?

i replaced my ipod screen with the sharpe end of an axe and i don't own an ipad

Oh, sorry for the ambiguity - just to confirm, it's not an ipad, it's an ipod - an ipod touch.
