At first I was quite shocked by their shoddy practices, but then I remembered the packets of biscuits that used to have 6 in and now only have 5 that are the same price, and the mints that lost a packet and the multi pack crisps, and all manner of other things that are on sale in the supermarkets.
Who, incidentally, also sell packets with 2 free, or 50% free, and I bet if we took the time to work out the pricing they'd be cheaper elsewhere.
It just seems to be standard marketing practices to me.

As for staff discounts, I assumed every shop gave their staff discount.

How many people do they employ, and what would that number be if they made a loss instead of a profit?

Interesting question. Research shows that when a new supermarket opens, there is generally a net loss of jobs in the area, due to the inevitable closure of independent shops outweighing jobs created by the supermarket. Whether this also applies to stores like Poundland, I don't know.

Our local Tesco pulled the same stunt with some doritos a bit back. 95p per packet or 2 packets for £2. We pointed it out to customer services, who didn't believe us, so we took her and showed her. We pointed out the dubious legality of such a promotion. OH mentioned watchdog. We went in the next day for some milk and thought that we would pass the doritos to see if the price was altered and it was.

We sometimes get some WW crisps/snacks etc from poundland as they are way cheaper than the supermarkets but we do pick and choose the stuff we buy there.

I only managed to watch the programme yesterday, and thought it biased to the extreme. If I were Tesco I would have been happy to pay for that programme to be made/shown!

Does Poundland states all its goods are THE CHEAPEST compared to ALL the major supermarkets at ANY TIME? No. But that was what the programme compared, and explicitly "disprove", and that somehow that is newsworthy, as if we should all be horrified to learn.

Ok Poundland Kitkats or Coco Pops or whatever might be 10% or 15% more expensive than the CHEAPEST special deal of ALL the major supermarkets - BIG deal! So we are talking about customers being ripped off (yes?) by 10p or 15p compared to if they had run around all said supermarkets to compare and shop for that item huh? Now ask yourself how much cheaper are most of Poundland's branded or unbranded items compared to your nearest supermarket or corner shop - £50? £1? £2? Did the programme throw any light on that? No. Why?

To me, the programme is a classic demonstration of of lies, damned lies, and statistics. Spewed as "righteous journalism" to boot!

Sainsbury's in Shrewsbury did this with beer last year. 3 for £5 on certain beers but it included 3 varieties where the individual bottles were priced at around £1.40 each
