Anyone tried Endurain yet?

Maybe none of you have even heard of it yet, but I thought I'd ask. It's a self-hosted Strava alternative. Obviously if you don't care about using Strava anyway this thread might not be much interest to you
Endurain Features
I think in order for it to be a viable alternative it needs a few extra features:
- Comments and Likes
- Support for device platforms other than Garmin Connect (Wahoo, Hammerhead Karoo etc)
- Routes would be nice too

I like the idea of setting up an instance for my cycling club. I read elsewhere you could configure it to have different colours/themes but I haven't seen that in the documentation. Given that Strava are likely going to "float" in the next few months/years, I'm increasingly concerned about my data and where it ends up. Obviously the device makers' platforms are free, but then you have the problem of being locked to that platform. I suppose for Endurain to be truly independent it'd need a way of connecting directly to Garmin, Wahoo and other devices without the manufacturer's platform having to be the data broker - unlikely that will ever happen.

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

P.S - I'd try setting it up myself but currently I've got NextCloud running on my server without a reverse proxy so it'd be rather tricky (for me at least) to set up without upsetting the apple cart!

Interesting, will have a play. Seems to need docker so I'd have to install that first... and risk bloxing my server!

That's already do-able (if I understand you correctly) - at least on Linux. I download tcx/hist files directly from my Garmin device without Connect, or Training Centre, or whatever Garmin software. I then upload them to Strava via their API - all automated; plug the Garmin in and run my script, done. I'd love to use Endurain as a Strava replacement, and control my own data.

I also use a couple of Linux packages (PyTrainer, TurtleSport) that also download direct from the Garmin device with no Connect involvement.

Fair point, you can always connect your device to your PC like the good old days but it's a bit clunky.

Precisely why I haven't tried setting it up myself yet 🙈. I think with a few more features I'd give it a go though, especially once my Strava membership runs out.

Question is, would my fellow club members trust me with their ride data more than Strava et al? Ideally the data would be encrypted server side so I can't see it without providing user credentials.

Inside my skull
I’ve always thought the only thing I am interested in seeing is, an outline of where someone has gone and how long they were out for. Not really interested in the rest.

Thus a service that created an outline static image with a duration would be fine by me. A title and description to be added by the person whose data it is, plus ability for followers to comment. Then throw away the detailed data, as that is held elsewhere.

Get rid of kudos, likes etc as it’s a way of not engaging socially but pretending you are.
