RIGHT, I have to start wearing a helmet, enough is enough, after 3 accidents I have gotten to a stage where I am gonna luck out.

The swenter for me is that I will wear a camera, thus making it less of a PITA ( I hate helmets you see)

So I wanted the Dirft HD170, however I am not gonna drop that much (£300+) on a camera.

I can get the X170 for around £100, does anyone here use the X170 while commuting ?

Can you post up some videos ? My main worry is the ability to get reg numbers while using it, the GO-Pro I had produced great footage but due to the angle of the lens I could never get a reg number from it.

Thanks

There are a couple of youtube users with this camera - take a look. I don't think it'll be any better than a GoPro at getting number plates. Even with the HD camera, which is much more successful at getting plates, it's still important to call out number plates so the microphone gets them.

Never needed to do that with my £3 MD80 tho

I assumed if the camera doesn't get the reg, then it cant be used as proof ???

There are questions regarding using camera footage itself as proof or not, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

But you still need it (the reg) if the Police want to follow up on something with a driver that left the scene.

I use a Drift X170, I have posted a few videos on this site - user name Khun Hippo.I will be uploading more. One video 'Camera Shake' shows the difference between the X170 and another well known camera. The standard X170 has a fish eye lens which is not to everyone's taste but you can adjust the volume (both record & playback and the exposure

placed... replaced?

Yes it can, if you find a similar 1C lithium cell, that fits. You can get slightly better capacities too (or if you believe the labels, 10x ;) ) few quid on ebay.

Check your Look Keo topic, I cant send PM's

Will look on eBay re the MD80, the quality is actually one of the best I have used to be fair.

Already seen, didn't get around to replying. I forgot to mention that replacing the battery inside will require some soldering...

There are at least two reasons why the leads are typically spot welded to the stainless steel case of a typical lithium cell

1. if the cell gets too warm it can explode;
2. The cases tend to be stainless steel therefore impossible to solder to.

Now I know nothing about the actual replacement cells for the Muvi - if they come pre fitted with leads ready to stick in the holes on the circuit board so much the better but even so be very quick indeed with the soldering.

YMMV but "if in doubt... don't" is the safe way to go.

I use the X170 as a still's camera never tried video on it (or any other camera) The Drift is not good on the handle bars with the supplyied mount as it tends to come off too easy and I have never used it as a head camera on the bike but if I ever change my helmet I might try mounting it but I have had some reasonable results useing it as a head camera while walking on the fells. (you not half get some funny looks off the farmers with dodgy stiles)Yet it is surprising how many walkers and farmers have asked about it (these are the hard faced ones who don't give a damm, if they want to know "they ask") I suspect that some farmers have worked out some strange uses for the camera's.
