A couple of further related observations.

I was cycling home on Friday evening and pulled up at a red light as some peds were crossing. One of them (a fairly raggedy looking old bloke) looked at me scowling and muttering something under his breath which seemed to me unlikely to be pleasanteries. I assumed he was cussing me for being on a bike. He couldn't have been objecting to the way I was cycling so it must simply have been the fact that I was a cyclist.

He might just have been a bit mad, and muttering at everyone. I don't think he's a reliable model for all pedestrians...

Maybe you don't need to take your son along, just ride like him (or really, I mean a stereotyped 4 year old, since I don't know your son.). Wobble about, ring your bell loads, grin all the time, fit some tassels to your handlebars and some Action Man stickers...:bravo:

I've got a minnie mouse bell on one of my bikes - and I'm not afraid to use it!!!!

It's a long time since I have had the streamers though - and even when I did have them they were "home made" out of lengths of knitting wool and stuck on to the end of the handlebars with sellotape :bravo:

.. and some cards pegged onto the forks so they go drrrrrrrrr in the spokes.

I always find people to be smiley when I've got Littlest-LC on the trail-gator .. probably 'cos she always sings "Don't Stop me Now" by Queen at the top of her voice.

The exception was the group of "pack mums" who we encountered once in a park, one of whom was heard to say, "too many f'ing bikes on this path ain't there?" as we went past (which was nice with their kids and mine about). I pointed out to them that they were walking on the cycle path: the foot path was 10 yards to the left .. didn't go down well.
