Last night we went to a 'Football presentation evening' at Oxford's Kassam stadium bacause the Lads U12 team got promotion to the A league. There were about 12 teams to recieve trophies from local worthies etc, official photographer and an MC, the Chairman of the league to walk us through proceedings. Oxford Mail the sponsors of the league were there, the trophies were a donation from a local sports shop and Junior and senior Refs were there to recieve awards and recognition as well.
All pretty straightforward stuff, celebrate kids success. Good stuff.

But at the rear of the room were a load of 'parents' standing who simply would not shut-up despite several pleasant and later direct requests for them to respect (a much over-used and under-understood word in football) the players for whom this should be a celebration. Frankly I left disgusted by peoples behaviour. It was 1 hour long, surely they could keep their bloody mouths shut for that long?

This certainly did not occur at a much larger gathering for the Athletics club recently.

Another event which served to further fuel my disdain of the 'football' world ....
Appalling.

Football is played by en large by the masses that does include people with less than desirable manners. I love football, but not this chavvy foul mouthed side of it. Wish it were more like rugby and it's supporters. It's not by accident that my nephew plays rugby in a private school!

My son has one of these every year. Last year was the first time anyone stayed to the end. Most leave when their presentation bit is over, leaving the last team with a handful of parents about.

 The same happened after his last tournament presentation (the one Ray Wilkins drove home from and was arrested for drink-driving) towards the end the place was almost empty. It's poor I have to say, really F'in poor.

I've been to precisely one rugby match, on the walk to the station after it I was pushed (tackled) through a hedge by a pi$$ed up rah who thought it would be a wheeze to take out the big guy.

Combine this and the behaviour of the rugby team & supporters at my college (and have you been in a pub where a rugby team is oh so hilariously engaging in drinking games?) and you've got some proof that there are idiots following both sports

But to the OG poster, that really sucks, I'd have been furious too.

Well when you see the behaviour of some at the pitchside, it's no surprise. His team got the fairplay award this year. Probably the only ones who didn't have a parent booked!

I hate it when people dont have the decency to shut up when someone is making a presentation.

You should've chanted to the rabble at the back (sung to the chorus of On Ilkley Moor baht' at)
It's nice to know you're here,
It's nice to know you're here,
It's nice to know you're here,
F*ck off!

That's what constantly staggers me, there are a lot, and I mean a lot of very bad attitudes out there from the parents and sometimes coaches that is clearly transferred to the pitch. 100 yards away are the Rugby club pitches where the atmosphere and sportsmanship and behaviour is in a different league. Chalk and Cheese.

I used to enjoy football. I used to go and watch Ipswich Town, and you have to like football a lot do that. Now I hate it. It represents all that is wrong with the human race.

It's not just football.

I attended an environmental conference last year. After one of the speakers completed his (over-long) presentation he returned to his seat in the audience and proceeded to talk and check his voice mail messages throughout the rest of the presentations. People like that simply have no respect for anyone else.

It's not new. I remember the family shame and outrage when my poor Dad made a presentation at a medical conference back in the seventies and most of the audience ignored him and chatted amongst themselves.

this type of anti social behaviour is now endemic.
I don;t go to the cinema anymore because of people using mobile phones during a screening.

I've pretty much the same stance. I used to go to watch bolton [oxymoron - try to] play football week in week out. Stopped over 10 years ago.

Although, the current euros are bringing back some interest for me again

Really? Never had an issue, apart from some people looking at it which creates a nice shiny light.

A London problem perhaps?
