Apparently it's safe to overtake into oncoming traffic!

Was the driver's reference to time trialling - odd that he knew what that was - an indication that he overtook because you were riding too fast? Because I once had a bus driver who'd passed but failed to pass before he had to pull into the next bus stop leaving me with no road - and his reason for not managing to overtake was that I was going too slow.

Poor driving, poor anticipation, poor road reading, poor observation of speed limit, poor assessment of speed and position of oncoming traffic.

Slightly bullying too.... All in all, not really the Gold Standard in terms of driving skill or competence, but I wouldn't report it.

In those conditons that would have shaken me up a bit and I quite understand your wanting to speak to the driver.

I would not have spoken to him, but I am wrong in many things. I'm not sure the rant added to the sum of human knowledge, but it probably felt good to do.

that makes no sense whatsoever. surely if he couldn't overtake in time you must have been travelling too fast you speedhog!! LOL

The other day i was cycling down the Fosse Way (not the best road in Britain to cycle down, but needs must, and it was at 6.30am so not heavy traffic, plus i was lit up like a christmas tree which, in the pitch black, really makes me stand out). Of the 60 or so cars that did overtake me about 2 came too close... enough to make me actually jump (that does not normally happen, i have nerves of steel)

The rest, however, although giving me a good 4 feet of room, did so at around 70mph!!! (nice speed to judge a 4 foot distance) and then, because they had obviously assessed this move at 500 yards or so back, and speeded up to get past me, they were then faced with oncoming traffic closer than expected. obviously forgetting that they were also travelling at about 50 - 60 mph (Fosse Way is 50mph) and having to do that thing where they whip in, to miss the oncoming traffic.

I would estimate they were definitely no more than 10 feet away, some closer, when they whipped in. Mmmm lets think about that for a moment. 10 feet at a combined speed of 120 to 140 mph. Superb driving. Because nothing has happened to these idiots they will carry on driving like that until something does.

I'm not sure the videoed driver's response makes any sense either. So there we have it - we're just cycling at the wrong speed, be it fast or slow.
