this happens a lot in commercial lauderettes, especially if they are washing table cloths and napkins with a high cooking oil content, or towels with sun tan lotion/massage oils.

One of the first (of many) useful things NT taught me was that rags used to apply wax polish to wood could self combust, if left screwed up in a ball in the open air. Either you seal them in a jar, or you spread them out to allow the volatile substances to evaporate freely.
But I'm seriously starting to distrust tea towels....
