Cheers Doc. So that what they took all the railings away in the war for, to build your bike? Coz they sure as hell didn't make Spitfires out of them!:biggrin:

I'd have thought Spitfires would be aluminium alloy - maybe dural or some such. You don't make planes of iron. Except the woodwork sort. I expect the railings were made into tanks?

I gather most of the railings were just stockpiled, until after the war. I'm not so wrought iron is much use. I suppose it can be melted down, but I'm not sure if the annealing process (is that the right word?) stops it being all that useful...

It was basically just a way to make people think they were 'doing their bit'

Although I think rags were collected for something to do with munitions - something a bit unlikely, but I can't remember what...
