Are Halfords patches shite!!??

Over the summer months my young daughter and I have been riding the forest tracks on our mountain bikes.. These excursions usually ending up with a puncture to repair, ( yeah, great fun aint it!?)

I purchased a 'Halfords puncture repair kit' mainly because it included the tools to do the job.

The problem....

On three occasions, after repairing a tube, it has blown out through the patch, leaving no alternative but to fit a new tube the second time around!....... Surely this shouldnt be happening??... And yes, I am checking the tyre and removing the thorn or whatever....

This leads me to ask..... Are Halfords patches just shite???? and what would be the best puncture repair kit to buy?

can't comment directly on the halfords brand but, are you removing the offending thorn or whatever from the tyre before putting the repaired tube back in the tyre?

I've been using them for donkeys years and they've been generally fine. Just started a new box, maybe thes new ones aren't a patch on the old ones. Puncture fixing sucess can be a bit of a black-art... I know this because the last one I fixed hasn't held, post mortem due later!

Halfords are the same as every other patch kit. Its all the same stuff.

I prefer rema patches as i think they fit better and the feather edge doesn't lift as much as other patches. the glue is glue is glue. its all the same.

I suggest you get better inner tubes; prevention is better than cure!

I would've thought that the glue and patch shouldn't give you any grief, even from Halfords. Like Patrick Pending says, make sure the offending thorn etc is removed and you clean up the area of the inner tube before applying the patch.

I did once get some pre-glued patches from Halfords, though. They were terrible.

I've been using Halfords patches for ages and never had any problems with them until yesterday. Repaired the same punture 3 times (yes, I did remove the glass shard that had caused it), just as described in the OP, the patches would seem to stick, but put any pressure in and it would start leaking out. I ended up using up all my remaining patches and stranding myself 10 miles from home (with no money and no mobile ). It was quicker to walk back to work (about two miles) and get the bus fare from my locker. Lesson learnt, but I'm not sure whether the Halfords patches were to blame, I've used them successfully in the past. Does the Vulcanising fluid have a shelf life? It was an old tube (of glue) and it certainly didn't seem to be working very well.

I use Wilko's patches. Never had a problem with them. It says use the glue sparingly i think, i dont, i just tip a load on, wait then slap the patch, then put abit more glue on around the patch if it needs it. Then wang some of that chalk on. Remember to sand the tube first though. Besides that, i cant see where anything can go wrong.
I even decided to put some pressure in the tube before it was in the tyre, the patch made a few crackling noises and let some air out. So i put on a more glue and left it to dry. That is now in my front tyre

I think the first p**ture repair kit I bought was halfrauds, for the same reason as the OP, it had most of the tools for the job. I don't think I ever had a problem with it. I still use the box but the original patches and glue have been replaced with time.

Yes. I have some of these now.

I had to crack open the tiny park box for the first time after about 2 years of it sitting in my saddle bag, after a recent puncture. Thankfully the glue was still good.
