Dopey Spurs fans have confused the legendary track cyclist with Premier League referee Chris Foy, the match official who presided over Tottenham's controversial 2-1 defeat by Stoke City on Sunday.
Foy and his linesmen denied Spurs an equaliser by incorrectly ruling-out Emmanuel Adebayor's goal, turned down two apparently clear-cut penalty appeals for handball, and harshly sent off Younes Kaboul.
But it is the Olympic star who is on the receiving end of abuse, prompting Hoy to issue a plea on his Twitter feed asking fans to get their targets right,
"Just for the record 1) I don't need glasses and 2) I do not lead a double life as an English premier league ref. That's Chris Foy," Hoy tweeted.
That failed to stem the tide immediately, however, yet the cyclist managed to see the funny side.
"Still getting some rather amusing grief from Spurs fans! On the plus side I've learned some new 4 letter words today. #FoyNotHoy," he added later.

I read this yesterday Vern, and thought to myself what a brilliant accidental marketing ploy. Tottingham will be awash with cyclists and fans 'HoyBoys' in no time, and he'll have the best seats when he visits! :santa:

Brings back memories of people unable to differentiate between paedophile and paediatrician.

I would say yes to your question... (apart from our ol' mucker Dayvo of course  )

^_^

Football fans (generally - oops, a stereotyping on my part) aren't known for their, erm, mental prowress. Unfortunately, it's the Tottenham fans that have excelled this time.

Hopefully someone at the club will be decent enough to invite him to a game at WHL as an apology, and to see the more 'challenged' fans squirm in the stands (seats).

Stupidest thing I've ever heard

You haven't lived then, mate, if that's the 'stupidest' thing you've ever heard.

Did you attend many matches during the 60s, 70s and 80s or read the newspapers or see the the news and experience the hatred and violence connected with it?

Did you, as a 14-year-old get the shite kicked out of you by a group of 8-10 grown men for wearing the 'wrong' scarf?

Hardly acts by intelligent lifeforms!

And no, I don't believe for a moment that all football fans are vicious ignorant people, far from it. But they are tarred with the same brush, me being one of them (in this instance) in my (generally - oops, a stereotyping on my part) comment.

Just to clarify an ambiguous point!

I wasn't referring to the type of football fan who cheers his/her team from the terraces.
I was referrring to the type of football 'fan' who makes threats to the official and happens to totally mistake one person for another.

Apologies if you (presumably) thought I meant ALL football fans.

And BTW, I capable of writing far more stupid things than I wrote above.

Reminds me of this old definition ...

Football: A game played by gentlemen and watched by hooligans

Rugby: A game played by hooligans and watched by gentlemen

Although I would question the status of the players nowadays.

Yes I did attend matches in the 70s and 80s. Yes I was chased for wearing the wrong scarf on more than one occasion (never got caught though). That was a different era though.
It isn't like that now. I remember watching the 2001 FA Cup final, Aresnal v Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium. I was in amongst a load of Arsenal fans and when Liverpool won I got shakes of the hand with a "you didn't deserve to win" comment, no threats etc.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are still idiots out there who use football as an excuse to fight, but a lot of these are organsied affairs.

Well the ref/linesmen were blind after that handball on the goal line.

[Note - I don't harbour grudges]
