Are we reaching critical mass?

I've been cycling for around 15 years in Sheffield.

I've noticed a big increase in the number of cyclists over the last 3 years or so.

Wouldn't call it a critical mass though, and I know I'm regarded by my colleagues and some friends as somewhat peculiar for preferring to ride when I could be driving.

At our local RC Church on Sunday, Father O'Flaherty spoke with venom and invective against the hegemony of the motor vehicle in modern society.

This, I thought, was the very epitome of Critical Mass.

We are still rare round here, on the Sunday rides I'll see a lot of cyclists if the weathers nice, on my Commute from Coventry to Nuneaton I see very few cyclists.

In London these days its not uncommon to see around 100 cyclists on a 5 mile commute. At one of the companies i work for they have installed new bike secure facilities in the underground car park for up to 80 bikes roughly. All the stands are full and many are doubled up.

I'd say it was nearer 300 between Streatham Hill and Islington - and that's before the rush hour.

Likewise, I've noted a huge increase in cycling in Sheffield, no mean feat when you consider the topography.

But I have to say, we're nowhere near the tipping point...

I reached tipping point once.... I was at the Poland Street junction with Oxford Street and I got a cleat stuck in my pedal.

I fell onto a taxi.

It was hurty.
