Are you a 'Bike rider' or a 'Cyclist'?

I'm not a bike rider nor am I a cyclist.

I am a bicyclist.

If i talk to someone who doesn't know that i'm a cyclist, and say to them that i went out on my bike they always seem to think i meant a motorbike. If i say that i went out on my bicycle they look at me as if to say why's he saying bicycle and not bike?

I was slighty disappointed he didn't land the bike, perphaps that was asking a bit... He's definatley a bike rider

To be honest with you, I never thought there was a difference in the meanings.
