I've a follow-up query for those with more knowledge than me on this:
The forum I mentioned earlier uses an API to compare registration attempts with a blacklist (held by stopforumspam.com). If the applicant's username, email address or IP address is on the blacklist, registration is denied but the attempt is logged and the aforementioned details are retained in the system logs.
Similarly, if a spammer does get through and begins to cause trouble, their account is deleted but their registration details remain logged because they are needed to enforce a ban on the use of that email address, IP, or username.
Can these data be retained since they are necessary for the administration and protection of the site?
