Finally, I have received the diagnosis I was expecting and I have osteoarthritis in my right knee.

I know that cycling and swimming are the two best kinds of exercise to keep the knee mobile and strong. Anyone else have this and has any recommendations for specific exercises that might be of use?

Yes, I have worn cartilage, although no bone on bone yet as far as I know. What you need is a tailored exercise programme from a physio to make sure all your muscles are working properly, especially when cycling. In principle cycling is great as its low impact, but make sure your bike fit is optimal, especially saddle height and position. Otherwise you could do more harm than good. There are plenty of exercises, but you need a physio to show you which ones are right for you and how to do them. It'll be worth spending a few hundred quid on some sessions with a sports physio, preferably one with interest in cycling. Also, get used to stretching after cycling if you can. Having the correct gearing and spinning not grinding, making sure your cleats are in the right place etc are also key

Swimming wise, frog kick in breaststroke is not usually advised especially op if you have worn kneecaps but see what feels most comfortable.

Where in the knee is the arthritis, how severe is it? What has the specialist said in terms of treatment? I find hyaluronic acid injections in my left knee help. I do them privately, but you may be able to wangle on the NHS

The other really key thing is keeping your weight down (not that I am much good at this).

Hopefully you've caught it fairly early, however a knee replacement isn't the end of course, lots of people get huge benefits from them (how widespread the damage is and your age will likely determine whether one is done)

^^^^^^ +1 I've lived with osteoarthritis in my knee for a few years (discovered when I had keyhole surgery on a torn knee cartilage) and one thing that does help is eating oily fish like Salmon or Mackerel a couple of times a week. I prefer this to Cod Liver Oil capsules. xx(
Glucosamine tablets are good too.

I have arthritis in both knees now, my left being the worst.
I heard a consultant say many times (I used to work in Ortho) that Glucosamine and Cod Liver Oil didn't make any difference once you have arthritis. I don't know how true that is but if you think they help then theres no harm in taking supplements!
As has been said, a good fit and low impact exercise is the way to go.
I overdid it last week by cycling 105 miles over the week, and am still suffering, 4 days later

thanks all.
Glucosamine off limits as I am pre-diabetic, unfortunately.

The bike is set up fine, plus I have changed my riding style completely from high gear / low cadence to low gear / higher cadence. That seems to help

Diet is The way to go I think, you raised the point of problems Glucosamine and being pre-diabetic. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3042150/
might be worth a read although I have come to accept that almost any dietary advice can be proven or disproven depending on the reports you choose to read and take on board..

I had very painful knees some years ago which were X-rayed and showed early signs of arthritis, a change in diet and supplements improved the situation to the point where recently, after a fairly dramatic crash during a club ride, the subsequent x-rays showed healthy knees, well apart from the crash damage that is ;-)

Low impact exercise absolutely, cycling, rowing, cross trainer, weight training, etc all good.

Exactly what Large said.

After once abandoning cycling due to terminally bad knees, my new cycling rule is, if my knee hurts I have been using the wrong gear/bike.

They first wanted to operate on my knee 15 years ago, I would not let them do so as time off of work was a no go. Cycling swimming and carrying as little weight as possible helps a lot.

Unfortunately my works means I kneel down a lot, but I always use pads.
