I have used Asda (Bell make) cables previously without issue over a couple of years, and for £4 for front and back brake and gear cables, inners and outers, ferrules and the bits that go over the cut end of the cable is a pretty good buy. They also do a chain also for £4, like the cables, Bell make. I have had one in my spares bag for over a year but never felt easy about fitting it and have always used KMC chains. Anyway, my son-in-law gave me an old mountain bike at the weekend. It is a Raleigh Nexos. 15 speed, friction shift on the front. I had a new Shimano SIS derailleur and a new 6 speed freewheel plus brand new indexed shifters in my spares box which went straight on without any modifications to the frame or wheel axle. Now the bike is an 18 speed indexed front and rear. A really good clean, a complete new set of cables and I decided to see just what that Bell chain was like so I have fitted that as well. It badly needs new tyres, and they are in the post so should be done very soon. I am not too sure why I didn't tell my son-in-law I had a well stocked spares box!
I mainly want it for towing my trailer along river banks and towpaths when I go fishing. I have recently bought a new hybrid with disc brakes and the disc prevents the hitch from connecting to the chainstay. The MTB is a bit rough round the edges but will do me a treat for why I want it. I just wont go far without a chain tool.......
