Ashton Court Gates Locked - Why?

Hi,
With the change of the clocks the Ashton Court gates are now locked at 5:15 in the evening - so I can't go home that way anymore on my commute.
Is this a problem for anyone else?
This was a quiet car free and safe route between Clifton and Long Ashton - I'm struggling to find an alternative that's safe or anywhere near as quick. I know there's plenty of places to get in when the gates are locked, but not really suitable on my road commuter...
Has anyone tried discussing this with the council? Is there any logic behind it?

Ashton Court just across the Suspension Bridge in Bristol (well North Somerset), where the Balloon Fiesta takes place.

I assume you mean on the entrance near the bridge if you are coming from Clifton direction - and I think it does have a grand set of gates - though I don't suppose I've ever noticed them closed. Though I have just looked on the website and it shows the closing times. Isn't the new Festival Way meant to extend through Ashton Court at some stage, though I presume it will be too near the bottom of the estate to be of use to you. Do you use Begger Bush Lane instead? I take it you have good lights ... I wouldn't want to be going down that steep road with the ramps on without good lights

I used to know a guy called Ashton Court, he kept trying to sleep with my girlfriend.
He didn't have gates, as far as I remember.

Yes, it's a pain, but it's always been closed at sunset as far as I can remember. 17:15 is a little annoying though.

Which way are you going? I always go via Long Ashton in the morning, and sometimes in the evenings. Since Ashton Court has been locked I've either been going a completly different way, or used the shared ped/bike paths around the underpass (or the underpass itself when it's wet - there's always loads of leaves on the path).

It also depends which gates you use. I think they keep some of the footpath gates open, so you could probably get in from Bower Ashton, and probably out onto Longwood Lane or Beggar Bush Lane, but as you say, that might not be suitable on a road bike (at the top end at least).
