Wondered what the general consensus is on this. I normally ride a motorbike and never stray into the ASL because I thought it was only for cycles. However, I've been riding my pushbike for a few days and noticed that lots of motorbikes have started to filter through stationary traffic and then pull ahead into the ASL. Yesterday, one even stopped between the front two cars, thus blocking my entry into any part of the ASL. Should the bikers be in there at all? In the pic below i don't use the cycle lane becasue I need to turn right immediately after the ASL, so i filter down the middle of the two lanes.

Rule 178. The only time it's ok for a motorist (including motorcyclist) to stop in the box is if they have passed over the first stop line whilst the light is still green. If they are in the box behind the ASL when the light turns red then they have to stop behind the ASL.
If the light turns amber or red before they have crossed the first stop line then they are not allowed to enter the box. They SHOULD not block access to the ASL, but becasue the word "should" is used, it is only advisory.

Your strategy is definitely the best one for turning right in my opinion.

I don't believe motorcycles are allowed in the ASL but have bigger things to worry about in life

Yeah I have bigger things to worry about as well, but this doesn't make me ride like a dick and block a zone that I shouldn't be in! The worrying thing is that it's usually learners on small bikes who should be fresh out of passing their CBT. Having said that my CBT instructor never mentioned anything about ASLs, but I guess the big picture of a bicycle in the ASL should give it away.
