Assos Alternatives?

So I have spoilt myself a while back and have got used to the comfort of Assos F1 Mile bibshorts. I have DHB Roubaix and Endura F260 and they do not come close to the comfort of the Assos pad.

I need some new bibs and was wondering if anyone had found a padded bib short that comes close to Assos in comfort but is slightly easier on the pocket in cost terms?

Any suggestions or should I just go and get another pair !

I personally haven't found anything to match Assos in terms of comfort and quality.... or price! Like many things, you pay increasingly more for smaller and smaller increments in performance. For my purposes, Assos is overkill.

I've found bibs around the £70 mark work for me, from a number of brands; Santini, Nike...

Whenever I ride behind someone wearing Assos shorts I can't help noticing how thin they are. See-through normally. It's an interesting look!

Dhb and Shutt VR standard ones are my bibs of choice.

Aren't Assos Unos slightly easier on the pocket? More of a race short than the Mille, having a 'compression' fit and fewer panels, but they use the same S5 pad. I used to bang on about how good Giordana Tenaxs were until I treated my ass to Assos: they don't compare in all honesty. Mind you, I've heard good things about the top line shorts from Santini, Castelli and Shutt VR, but I can't see anything coming close to the Assos pad and all round quality. I seem to remember that Assos are the only people to make and patent (I think) their own pad, whereas all the others buy their more generic pads in from one big pad manufacturer - the name of whom escapes me.

I'm inclined to agree. I think you're right about the pad btw, I think it is Assos's own.

I'm not currently in need of new bib shorts but when I am I'm tempted to try Shutt VR and maybe even Rapha. I like to try new stuff and form my own opinion.

The DHB Aeron Pro are really good for the money. Not Assos good obviously, but for less then half the price, they are probably at 90% of the quality. I love them.

IMO my old Lusso "Pro-gel" shorts are better than my Assos; not so "banjo" like and better absorption of road buzz. They were so good that I immediately bought another pair. Lovely.
Unfortunately a subsequent pair of "Pro-gel" have a completely different pad and they aren't as good for me, although they're not too bad. I'm not sure what I will buy next.
I'm a little disappointed with the durability of my Assos shorts (my 3/4 bibs haven't had as much use). They do seem to have lost some of their cushioning. I think that they're still opaque, or at least no-one had told me otherwise................
Everytime I visit a bike shop I spend some time squeezing the pads in the shorts and bibs. It's not a hobby (or perversion) but a genuine attempt to decide what I should buy next.
