Astronomy clubs in Greater Manchester

Next month is my youngest nieces birthday her Mum tells me she is into astronomy had a look to see if there was any astronomer clubs around the Bolton area.

So far having no luck finding anything on google. Does anyone know of any clubs or anything else I could buy her that's related to astronomy that doesn't cost the earth.

Must be plenty of books Gromit. The Hubble site has some good pix too :-http://hubblesite.org/ There's something called "space weather" which I'll google at some stage - it lets you know about stuff happening (comets etc etc).

But niece will need atelescope eventually. Binoculars are a good starter tho'

As regards prezzies (*sorry*) - well what sort of budget are you thinking of? Books are always a good way to get started, although perhaps less of a thrill in these days of the internet. For actual observing, good binoculars are better at entry level than a small telescope. Or perhaps gadgets like a planisphere... SGL will have people better at giving advice than I am...

Echoing the use of bins as being of far more practical use than a small telescope at entry level.

Mind you, WCMnr has a TAL100R which was very good value for money.
