My Mum started to work when I was 7 and My Sister was ten, she was always going on about latch key kids, it really seemeed to upset her having ot go to work, having my own key rather than one dangling behind the letterbox was great. I remember clearly the freedom I felt!
My mum gave up work soon after she married my dad and hasn't worked since. Looking back, I think I've only started to realise recently just how lucky I was that there was always a parent at home when I got there.

Same here - Mum didn't work after I was born, then, when we got the shop, she and Dad were in the house almost all the time.

Edit: I forgot but the first answer was 9/10 for me. We moved and I had a year left at school so I was left to get the bus into L'pool and home again. How could I forget, so many mini adventures doing it. Sitting between the Lions paws outside St. George's hall waiting for the bus.

did you go to school on your own?
9 - I'm the oldest and so, as long as my mother was at home looking after my younger sisters she'd walk us all to the school (and then walk back again with those who were too young for school).
did you go to the shops on your own?
Really cannot remember - I do not recall being sent out to get stuff from the shops, we went on a trip once a week to spend pocket money
were you first left alone (or in charge of younger sibs) in the house?
9 - ie at the point when youngest sister started school and Mum started the process of returning to the job market. We all had to meet up outside school and walk home together, and I had the key.
and...I know this is intrusive, but, if you wouldn't mind, would you tell us when you were born?

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Something like 8, 7, 9 (something like 13 overnight), 1970.

i reckon 6 for going to school, about 7 for the shop, I'm the youngest of three so we're never in charge of them, but did start babysitting at 10. Born 1969.

were you first left alone (or in charge of younger sibs) in the house? had an older Aunt living with us so this is a bit blurry, possibly 8-9

did you go to school on your own? - About 7

did you go to the shops on your own? - About 6 or 7

were you first left alone (or in charge of younger sibs) in the house? - I had a key to my house when I was 7 and was first left alone with a younger sibling when I was 12, although he didn't actually come along until I was 12

and...I know this is intrusive, but, if you wouldn't mind, would you tell us when you were born? - 1980
