What I do know is that my daughter's numbers will be higher than mine.

I have 3 daughters 8 12 15. And I am pretty much the same, but I cannot really tell you why. I survived and I think it did me good and I learnt a lot about life.

I do not think the world is much, if at all more dangerous than the 70's. Now you have mobile phones and if you are really paranoid you can track a phone.

I think it is peer generated and has become the norm. I am not sure who it protects me or my kids, I suspect it is the former.

10, 10, can't remember, 1969.

Seems late compared with others, but 10 was when we moved back to England from Belfast, so I can understand being on a tight rein before that.

In my case it was 6, 6, 10, and 1958. I had no main roads to cross to get to my primary school, although I had to walk alongside a fairly busy road, it was about 2 miles from home.

Walked 1000 yards to my nursury school when I was four, under the supervision of my five year old BIg Sister.
Walked a mile and a half to school, across the city, with my mate Benny when I was five.
Walked to shops alone aged five.
Can't remember when I was left alone at home.

did you go to school on your own?

Well, I remember walking home from School (1 mile) when I was 6. That, however was only because, due to an understanding, I missed my friend and his Mum who were supposed to be walking home with me.
Actually, I remember it happened twice, and I LOVED it (what my freind's Mum thought however I don't know).

I remember walking to and from school by myself when I was 10, but that was only because my big brother had started at the Academy instead. Before then we walked home together (starting when I was probably 7 or 8). I also got my first house key then (for obvious reasons).

did you go to the shops on your own?

I can't remember, but not very old, and probably before I learned to cycle. We had a couple of shops very nearby, one within easy toddling distance (which ironic as it is now a Nursery).

were you first left alone (or in charge of younger sibs) in the house?

I was the youngest of 3, so never.

and...I know this is intrusive, but, if you wouldn't mind, would you tell us when you were born?

in my case it's 5, 6, 8 and 1954

1982, the day HMS Sheffield was sunk in the Falklands in fact. War Baby me!

School - about 6 or 7 (can't remember but I can remember nearly getting my youngest sister run over when I crossed in a very small gap between cars when I was about 9.
Shops - probably about 8, (though it might have been younger when I was at my grandparents house.
In charge of getting dinner for siblings in the house on our own - about 8 (well putting dinner in the oven it was already prepared in the pot).
Born 1966

My children probably didn't walk to school until they were about 9 but then I was walking younger children to school anyway, and shops about the same age and in charge of siblings nearer to 12 (even then I felt guilty as I thought there was an age limit of 14 for a few years).

Damn this thread! It's got me trying to work out how old I was when I did my first London to coast and back ride. It must have been around 15 riding with a classmate down to Hastings - after that I did a few on my own. It must seem pretty early for unsupervised 100+ mile rides on the big boys' roads now but then it was just something you did on a sunny weekend, it was cheap and the parents didn't seem to worry at all.

Minor digression, sorry.

There was a kid round here in a quite busy part of west London who wandered off from his creche aged three and made it to his home four hundred yards down the pavement along a bustling road. Ever since, and he is now in his mid-teens, he has been known as The Bolter.
