Are axles hub specific? I have a spare axle from a Planet X hub and wonder if I can use it with a Shim 105 hub. The 105 axles has cones though whereas the Planet X one seems to have an allen key set up. Any ideas/advice?

IIRC the Planet-X is a sealed bearing hub, the 105 cup/cone.
I've not had much success swopping axles even between two different cup/cone hubs, so my guess would be that it's unlikely to be a go-er.
Happy to be proved wrong though....

As you say - one has cones, with a bearing race machined into it, while the other uses sealed bearings - ergo, it will not fit.
