I know this should go elsewhere but i'm meant to be off touring tomorrow, so need a quick fix.

basically the outside plate of the cage has been bent, possibly happened on the train home this morning, so now the mecs moves but the chain won't shift onto the small chain ring...

can i try and bodge it with pliers, or should i be heading to a bike shop pronto?

if you have a good relationship with a decent lbs, they will sort you out soon as.

If you use pliers as a bridge between the two plates there is the danger of bending the undamaged plate. Can you unscrew one end of the damaged plate, get the chain out of the way and then pop a bit of wood behind the damaged plate and gently hammer it back into shape?(take the mech off the frame before doing this though as you don't want to damage the attachment)

I would say bring it 'round - I've got an xt front mech in the spares bin, but it'll probably work out cheaper to go to the lbs!

Just bend it back - that's all the LBS will do unless they try to sell you a new one.
