Bad Back, Racks and Wind

Been off the bike for a few weeks having strained a muscle/(s) in my lower back and yesterday was was the first time I felt good enough to ride and was able to move without pain. Thought I'd put the rack back on the bike just in case using the rucksack aggravated whatever I'd done so had half an hour in the garage yesterday fitting the rack and just giving the bike a general once over before this morning.

Out of the house about 7:45 this morning and first thing I noticed was how cold it's become over the last couple of weeks, driving for a couple of weeks has made me soft. Got the bike out of the garage and put the bag on the rack, one of those Topeak MTX quick-track efforts, wheeled the bike down past the car, cocked my leg over and away I went. Bejesus! having the rack and bag on didn't half make the bike feel slugish. Now my bike isn't the lightest in the world, early 90's GT mtb fitted with an Alfine hub doesn't exactly make for a nimble ride but having the rack on just felt weird and unresponsive. Hey-ho won't be too bad once I get rolling I thought, wrong - bloody wind, gusty horrible cold head wind.

So after a slow 40 minute ride (taking it easy you see!) into a gusty cold head wind I finally made it to work, not as knackered as I thought I would be. The jury is still out on the rack, if the back is feeling stronger by the end of the week it may come off again if I still haven't got used to the way the bike handles with it on.

Rack or no rack, at least you're back in the saddle. Good effort. Hope the back is OK on the way home too.

I've recently changed from a rucksack to a pannier, I agree the bike does feel sluggish and unresponsive. I have also found that the rucksack used to keep me warm too, which is a negative in the summer but a positive in the winter.

Anyway you're back cycling and I hope your back gets better.
