About 28 miles into my ride yesterday, even through the endorphins coursing through my body I felt the sharpest sudden pain I've ever known, just where the neck becomes shoulder on the left side. Now like everyone, I've got stang off a bee (yes I can; it's a colloquialism) loads of times so know what to expect but this was something new and extremely nasty.

And it wasn't just one bee. The pain grew and grew so I stopped the bike, took off my cycling jacket and heard an increasingly faint buzzing whereupon two dead bees dropped to the floor at my feet.

The pain never wore off as I rode home and I couldn't turn my head. Even this morning, the pain is still there and it's the most unusual after-effect I've ever had off a bee sting. I did stick the two miscreants into my drinks bottle and took them home so I could carry out a summary execution on their corpses with a big slipper.

Pleased to say I've never had a bee sting, although my entire right elbow has swollen up this morning from a 'kin mosquito bite yesterday. Itches like crazy, and my whole arm aches. Last time I got one I had to go to hospital as it started "tracking" towards my heart. Keep an eye on yours and go see a doctor if it does the same thing.

I have a bad reaction to wasp stings and the site swells up like a balloon, so you can imagine my alarm when I was stung on the throat by a wasp a couple of years ago. Now I always carry anti-histamine cream with me.
