saw a cyclist with a puncture at the side of the road, my spare inner tube fitted so I helped the guy out and with just 3 miles of open countryside left on my commute I get a puncture myself and half to walk the rest of the way in heavy rainfall!

I normally never see a cyclist on my route and even though I got home later than usual and absolutely soaked I was happy to have helped someone! But from now on I will carry 2 innertubes!

Not really sure the point of me posting this aside from this is my first puncture in a few months and it seems a little unlucky!

You did your good deed for the day, thats all that matters, it`s satisfying;);)!!

I had somebody help me out like that once, I was 12 miles away from home, in the same boat, and a chap in a car stopped (who also had been out cycling the moors) and dropped me home to my door after struggling to cram my bike onto his bike rack. Decent people are around!!!

I remember about twenty years ago I got a p@nct@re somewhere round Tottenham and knocked at a house and they gave me some tyre levers. Not quite sure why I didn't have any tyre levers anyway.

I used to just carry a puncture repair kit but after one incident I carry a tube as well.
I was cycling on the Ridgeway when my rear tube went bang! and I found a 9" split in it.
Fortunately like Speccy1 says there are decent people around.
Pushing the bike home an old guy in a really old mini with a sunroof stopped and offered me a lift home. I started to take the wheels off (the bike) but he said no its fine, proceeded to lift the (very muddy) bike in through the sunroof, parked the rear wheel on the back seat and the front wheel on the front edge of the sunroof and drove me home. Wouldn't accept anything, said to just do someone else a favour. Top man!

When I went out for my first decent distance ride (~20-25 miles - had not done more than 5 or so previously), I found I'd bitten off more than I could chew when I got to a long slow climb. I got off and walked. I had a woman going the other way, brake from ~60mph and then reverse back up a 100yrs so ask if I was alright and offer a lift/use of the roof bike carrier.

I'd agree the BigSid's helpers attitude, sometimes just doing some small good deed for someone else can really make their day. If everyone was more willing to help each other, we'd live in a happier world.

I had 3 p*nctures this morning, but only 2 repair patches and no spare inner tube.
All this after having just dropped off the car at the garage for its MOT.
Agh!!!!!!!!!!! ;)!

Buy some marathon pluses, you wont regret it!

Thats +1 karma to the OP.

Also had puncture in pouring rain and a random guy stopped and offered me a lift home, which I gladly accepted as the 5 mile walk back wasnt very appealing.

Walk home was 1-2 miles - You just don't realise how far this is until you have to walk it.
Then swapped the p*nctured Allez (Specialized Pro tyres) for the Sirrus with bulletproof Schwalbe Durano tyres.

How far do you guys commute? How far between punctures on average? I currently average ~100miles a month and have had no punctures commuting ever. I used to get punctures as a kid on off-road trails - and my wifes trike had slow punctures due to old neglected tyres/tubes.

Have I just been exceedingly lucky? Or are you guys riding over every pothole and bramble bush you can find?

(It does worry me that I'm going to get one eventually - and I'll not be able to fix it by the roadside. I do carry a spare tube, patch kit and basic tools to get the wheel off.)

I dont want to tempt fate, but I havnt had a visit from the p-fairy for a long while.

I also average about 100miles a month on my commute (then there is leisure cycling and nipping to the shops/friends houses etc) so it must be close to 150miles a month.

The last, "one" I had (IIRC) was when my rear tyre wore right through at the end of last summer! I had a spate of many occur over a short period of time and hadnt seated the rear wheel perfectly striaght. I think that caused the tyre to wear down quicker than it should. Since then I put two new (off road, MTB) tyres and two new tubes in and have been lucky since! Ive also made 100% sure the wheels are always perfectly straight!

Ditto - who wants to be messing about patching a tube in the wet/dark months of a commute? Bung the spare tube in and sort the punctured one out back home in the warm and dry!

Depends on a few things, but generally, I only bung the spare tube in if I find, and remove, the cause of the puncture.

If I can't find it, and I've got the time, I'll prefer to repair the tube that's there.

There's little point bunging a new tube in only for it to be punctured by exactly the same flint/thorn/glass that did the first one.

I also carry a 26" MTB tube in my commuting bag, despite every bike I own having 700c wheels. I'm yet to encounter anyone needing it though.
