Peanuts work a treat and after a couple of months of feeding them, we had two clans visiting us at a regular time every night. We used to sit with the patio door open, the security light on and they'd take the peanuts off the step just inches away from us.
To start them off, you might want to put the peanuts under a good sized rock/stone - the badgers are strong enough to move the weight whilst the mice/rats will struggle.
We had no problems in our garden, but our next door neighbour complained about a rather large latrine that just grew and grew in their garden
Another tip; if you want to know if they've been past during the night, scatter some sand and check for foot prints in the morning.
Happy days
