you can't beat flageolet beans

Well, you could... but you might not want to eat them afterwards.

Oooo yes, tc, do share. Is it one of those recipes that gets spicier the more Naga-vipered you get?

 What most people forget about chillies is that they love salt. I salt this kind of stuff at the end so you can afford to "overdo" the chilli a bit when you add it, in the knowledge that it will all fall into place when seasoned. If you've gone mental with the Scoville scale by accident, you can always serve them with a dollop of soured cream or greek yoghurt. And/or some more cheese...

Flageolet beans are ace simmered in a thickened sauce made of a whole head or garlic, a large tub of cream, and some stock (and this can even be done in the microwave in about ten minutes flat), but that's a different story.

We sometimes have it with lamb, but it's so nice the meat's pretty redundant.

I'll buy that. Is it lunchtime yet?

thanks very much theclaud! They sound yummy. Think I will try them with cannellini beans first - probably this weekend as it looks like I won't be doing much riding thanks to the weather. Might be time to open that tin of Serrano chillies I've been saving! I use chick peas, balck beans and kidney beans a lot in stews but not the beans you list above so cheers for the advice

(edited for syntax that looked snobbish)

It's a bit more complicated than that...
A slug of wine if there's one around - I think white works better for breakfast but red is fine

Sig material...

Actually you're wrong about beans for breakfast. Baked beans are wonderful, but not for breakfast.

Did anyone else completely miss the fact that Heinz officially renamed their Baked Beans to Baked Beanz in 2008 or am I the only one?

Just you Morty, we all knew about it  - actually it was changed to Heinz Beanz, they dropped the 'baked' bit.

Friend of mine used to have a tin of Biba baked beans, from the 60s or 70s I guess - classy!

A baked bean piperade is rather nice for supper - very gently scramble a couple of eggs in warm beans. Serve on toasted soda bread.

With a sprig of parsley on top

Well now that was interesting. This morning I used theclaud's recipe, more or less: a tin of borlotti beans + dried tomatoes in olive oil. I added some spices and chopped chilies and ended up with some rather tasty bean stew (must have put too much water in). It wasn't anything like baked beans but very nice. Thanks again tc - will deffo keep that recipe....
