They must be pretty light whatever they are. She was holding almost all of them with just one steady hand.

I thought they looked like some sort of leaves from something like a palm tree....a sort of lumpy end from where it joins a stem, tapering to the other end.

Yes, I thought stalks or something. They had a series of bumps along each edge, perhaps leaf attachments?

A bit like dried palm frond stalks minus the leaves. Mind you palm fronds are heavy.
