I don't own one, but standard banjo tuning is close enough to GDAD that I can sort of make a noise with one.

I’m thinking of buying one and learning to play.

If I had any musical talent at all I'd love an Irish tenor banjo. My neighbour, in his mid forties, bought one about three years ago and has turned into a highly accomplished player. I think he had about a dozen lessons at twenty five quid a time and put a lot of hours in watching Youtube videos.

Thats pretty much how I taught myself mandolin. I read music, but spending a few years learning the notes on on a fretboard with yet another tuning system just didnt tug my rug, so internet and pooptube it was.

Anyone wanting to learn an instrument at home never had it so good.

There's also a Banjolin.

I've got one. Makes a different sound from a mandolin, but the tone of mandolin is much nicer. Also just treated myself to the latter.
