Siddways facing orange LED's would be interesting though, but maybe only on flash - wheel reflectors from the side work but in part becuas of the rotation of the wheel.

if I sort some out thing they will be *on* rather that flash... flashing might give other road users the opinion that they are indicators and that you are going to turn..

still think tyreflies are cool as well

If you go to your local Poundshop, you can buy ( for £1 ) a 3 x AAA 1.0W LED torch; about 13mm diameter.
With a bit of packing, it is narrow enough to wedge in the handlebars.
Can even filter the lens with some red celophane, but amber is a side marker.

I have one of these as a front lamp. My work colleague is sick as a pig 'cus its just as bright as his £20 Cateye...Ha Ha Ha.

For serious lighting, I use a 5W LED Ring Cybalite. Keep you £100 systems with bottles full of batteries. 4 x C 4000mAhr cells = 1 week commuting (8 Hours).

I really really really wouldn't bother with side lighting.

In the dark wet winter nights, there's an awful lot of light pollution going on for a driver to process - headlights, sidelights, windscreen dazzle, reflections, bikes, motorbikes. I'ts been my observation that if lights are not where a driver expects to see them and don't give a really clear, unambiguous message, they won't get registered. You're better off with good front and rears, and good hi-viz kit, including hi-viz ankle bands. These give all round reflection, and their bobbing-up-and-down motion says "CYCLIST!" like nothing else on the road.

That's what I'll be doing this winter, as usual.
