Barcelona is a stupidly-designed airport that frequently requires taxiing aircraft to cross the live landing runway.

Reportedly in that case, all involved knew what was going on - the taxiing aircraft was told to expedite its crossing due to the aircraft on short finals, and the landing aircraft was told to expect a late clearance due to the crossing - but the pilot understandably decided he wasn't happy and opted for a go-around.

I had a similar incident at Basel airport.
I was flying home and sitting in a window seat. When we got to the holding point before turning on to the run way, the aeroplane I was on overshot the holding point and parked with its noise sticking out into the runway. I could see another aeroplane on final approach and thought that, considering where we were parked, this would be close.
We sat waiting for a few seconds and then pulled forward onto the runway. I thought that we would then accelerate down the runway and take off. But, we sat there and the incoming aeroplane flew over us and went round again.
We sat on the runway for around 3 minutes or so and then I saw the other aeroplane on the return leg of its trip around and we then took off. I did write to the airline concerned to ask if this constituted a near miss or not and was told that they had “No record of such an incident taking place”.

The last time i landed at Barcelona airport we taxied for so long i thought i would disembark to find myself back in London.
Can it be any worse than Schipol, it took almost as long to taxi to the terminal as it did the flight from Heathrow.

I bet the two planes were over a km apart; a long telephoto lens will compress distances and foreshorten everything. The phenomenon is why you sometimes see photos of apparently massive figures silhouetted against the sun or the moon.

Just don't tell the tour guide that @Rickshaw Phil and I had the misfortune to come across in Majorca many years back...

We were on a coach trip around the island and near the airport, when he said this, no word of a lie, "you see those two planes, they are going to crash into each other when they land" and then laughed over the microphone, followed by telling us about the air disaster on Tenerife in the 70's (I think) when two planes crashed in fog.

:stop::wacko::eek:

Let's just say the bus went very quiet for the rest of the tour!

From the touchdown point to the crossing point is pretty much exactly 1km, but at 140 knots the landing aircraft will cover that distance in 14 seconds ...
