Just send a note to his boss to ask why.
It seems silly and maybe Hitler, sorry the security guard , is making it up as he goes along. On the other hand there may be a reason which hasn't been explained to him.....though I can't see what.

Beyond that, it hardly seems worth getting on a high horse and making an issue about "rights". Life is too short.

I am truly shocked you should implicitly equate these two issues.

Discrimination is discrimination. What do you suggest is different in terms of scale between a person being told to push his bike past a barrier and a person being told to sit at the back of a bus?

I think those who think modern cyclists are not being systematically discriminated against in the same way that blacks were in earlier decades are living in a dream world. I am guessing some here must not have seen some of the more violent or disturbing motorists' opinions on the Internet.

So they gave you a contact name/number?
Have you used it?
It could be that they've carried out some sort of H&S risk assessment?
Could just be a BS policy thought up by one jobsworth?

You beggar belief. What we have is people of one ethnicity (whether cyclists, bus passengers or whatever) being discriminated in law against people of another ethnicity. Even worse, being regarded as inferior on skin colour.

Everyday on every street we discriminate in favour of the motorist or the cyclist. We can agree/disagree on that. But if you discriminate because the cyclist or motorist is black then that's a very different thing. In this case hopefully the security guard would be history and rightly so.

You have a serious problem in the proportionality department.

Get over it. Pushing your bike for a few yards isn't a big deal.

Yeah, I know it ain't a biggie, but after a 17 mile commute I just wanna get in and the thought that somebody wants to inconvenience me, just because I happen to be riding a bike, just hacks me off ! <rant/over>

Perhaps next time you go in you should black up like Al Johnson and really push the discrimination angle?

PS I know that discrimination is not a funny subject and fully I agree with the comments above. To equate this issue with discrimination is such a ludicrous proposition that it warrants sick humour

Cracking a solo.
Now lets see;
Hitler - check
Discrimination - check
Encourage vandalism - check
Wildly inappropriate historical reference - check
Yes, this one's shaping up nicely.

Before we relocated to less appropriate offices, we had an automatic barrier out front of our place, too. Of the 200 or so who passed it each day, all but four were motorists. Odd then, to note that there were two recumbents going in and out each day. It certainly gave an incentive to keep the back of mine suitably weighed down. An inch off the rear suspension, and I'm through without an incident.

Where I work there is a little booth, in which a security man use to sit and you would show your works pass to and they would wave you through. Now they have installed a fully automated barrier system with swipe access. Signs were put up informing cyclists not to use the barrier.

So instead, I would scoot up the dropped curb onto the pavement to the security building flash my pass and scoot back onto the road. Then security put ‘cyclist dismount’ notices in the window, then a pair of cones across the path and finally last week four cones attached with ribbon that blocks the dropped curb.

This morning, they were waiting for me…

I had a pleasant chat with the security guy and basically they want me to walk my bike into work through their cone chicane. I asked him why I just couldn’t use the barrier, surely it poses the same risk as a motorcyclist, he couldn’t answer. He gave a contact name and mentioned a petition, but I think he was just fobbing me off.

Anyone else got unhelpful barriers at work?

You are doing better than us, we have a total ban on cyclists using the drive that leads into work, going in we have to dismount at the bottom and walk in, going home we have to walk to the bottom and then get on the bike, its a good 100 yards, it pisses me off no end.

What is the reasoning for banning cyclists from using the driveway?

I'm not sure, I've heard several stories, the official line seems to be safety, though its the best factory entry/exit I've used in over 30 years of commuting. I've only been at the place for a couple of years and the ban seems to have been in place for a long time, everybody else seems happy with it.

Saw the end off!

Seriously...

At work we have these barriers and after a word with security they were shortened to allow cclists through at the end.

Also the case at two Naval establishments where I worked.

The others all treated cyclists as traffic, with no problems.
