I relied on M+S thermal vests for years, but I have to admit that the lightness of base layers is pleasing. Nothing keeps me as warm as my woolly M+S long sleeved vest, but for those not so cold nights a base layer is good enough and doesn't make me look like Bluto Blutarsky

M+S have started doing lightweight thermal vests. The long sleeved ones are 2 for £19. They wash like a dream, and they are as good as the fancy base layer I was given. Better yet, they're long - the 38/40 size would be easily long enough for a person 6 foot 3 inches tall.

dellzeqq if its a retro ride then go string vests , if modern then perhaps a modern style base layer would be more in keeping

Whatever works for you really.

Personally, I sweat like a Pee-Eye-Gee pig cycling in thermal tops. I have several for motorcycle use and they work in that context but on the bike, when I'm generating heat, no way. Give me a wicking base layer any day (and preferably merino).

However, if thermal vests do it for you then end of story - fashionista considerations aside obviously.
