..Hi..can anybody recommend a basic bike maintenance toolkit. I have seen the one in Halfords for circa £35, and it seems to contain most of the relevant tools...but would I be better off spending more?..(have seen some "professional" kits, but these are in the £hundreds ..or alternatively buying the tools separately....

thanks for any input

Something like this should cover most of it:

I wouldn't bother spending more. Buy a kit, then upgrade the bits you use most often, probably the chain breaker and a multi-tool.

These would be pretty handy as well:

Edinburgh Bike coop do another kit similar.

It's a good start, then buy bits as you need and go along. That's what I did, bit by bit. My tools must be worth hundreds now, but it was over years. Find an offer and go for it. Halfords often do 3 for 2 on Park bike tools.

I think I got the one you are referring to myself last year... http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_522915_langId_-1_categoryId_242558 although, worth noting I got 25% off for reserving online... not sure if that still applies.

Only part I can fault from it are the pedal spanners seem a lot more flimsy than usual pedal spanners (luckily the 15mm open ender that comes with it has fitted all pedals I needed to remove)

All in all decent bargain for what i paid.

It's worth bearing in mind if it's this one in Halfords:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_522915_langId_-1_categoryId_242558

Then scroll down on the right and you'll see if you buy or reserve it online with a can of GT85 the two together come to less than £30. Sometimes it then knocks another 10% off if they have one of their regular 10% off motoring events (because GT85 is a motoring product too I guess).

I have that kit and it gets me by, but I haven't had to do anything complicated.

I would echo most of the above. My starter kit looks like virtually all of those above and them I have just purchased additional tools as and when needed. I would add that a work stand and good track pump also make a huge difference.
