Install and use Windows powershell instead. Massively more capable.

Or install Linux and use bash instead. Even more capable.

Thanks - will look into those options. I have Linux on my laptop, but the desktop that runs all the time here has to be Windows: it was bought specifically to run a piece of software that is Windows only.

It may have Powershell already, depending on the Windows you have.

In some respects, it's better than *NIX scripting, in others, it's so maddeningly over wordy and complicated that I long to be back in Solaris. Don't write it off though, it does a lot of things very well.
