Bath to Shower conversions...

Quick question and I know there are a lot of if and buts to this, but would anyone be prepared to tell me how much it cost them to have either of the following done please
  • a bath taken out and a shower put in its place.
  • a second bathroom put in (with shower not bath) taking the space from an existing room.
If you are not happy putting the cost online, can you just PM me please?

It is just we are looking at buying a house and I need to know roughly what sort of figure I would need to set aside to convert a bath to a shower with me not being able to climb into a bath anymore... (since my back went leaving me with the right sided issues I have currently...). I appreciate there are a lot of variables, but right now I don't know if I need to put £1,000, £5,000 or £10,000 aside (the latter is not happening!) and it could influence which house we purchase.

So roughly from other people's (that's you :okay:) what sort of figure would I need if everything was 'straight forward' please?

I was thinking of taking an average of the sensible replies please. I'm just aiming on a shower that works, nothing fancy, maybe slightly bigger than average cubicle would be useful and getting a chair onto the wall for me to sit on - or a corner seat etc. Standard tiling, or matching to existing in bathroom and 'fixing' the flooring to match what is there (which in most cases is either tiled or laminate flooring).

My parents did this 2yrs ago. That cost £4500ish. It included a double shower with grip rails and a wall seat, a higher loo too which has paid dividends since they had it as my mum has had 2 knee replacements.

Did something similar for my mum. Took out the bath and replaced with shower. Glass panel and walk-in - no door etc. Made good the tiling and fitted a bath-sized shower tray - these obviously exist for just this purpose. IIRC it was about £2500. Unfortunately she's no longer with us and the house is for sale.

thank you. This is just what I need to know and the sort of thing I am looking at. A walk in shower with no door would make life much easier for my OH who has to help me bathe

and again, very much thank you. It is much appreciated. The higher toilet is something I am also considering as well. I am rapidly feeling like an old woman!

One bit of good news is that my mother has informed me I won't have to pay VAT on at least the parts, and possibly not the labour (she can't remember if they had to pay it on labour). She is also going to give me an idea of what they paid as well, (but they had a washing machine and tumble dryer fitted to their bathroom and rather expensive tiling (travertine tiles), so she needs to take various things off the bill and work out roughly what they paid without the extra bits!).

My older sister has slight mobility problems and was beginning to struggle to use a bath so she switched to a shower when she was having her house refurbed. She has a sliding door on the shower and a wall-mounted seat. This definitely makes things easier for her. And for her husband - he was getting backache from helping her in and out of the bath!

(I did ask about cost, but they had lots of work done on the house at the same time and it was all lumped together into one bill.)

Converting an existing bathroom is far cheaper as you have water and waste in situ.
Turning a bedroom into a bathroom is a pain, you need to think about how you get water in and out.

2.5k 3k should be plenty..
get the FULL COSTED QUOTE in writing and make sure they know thats all you will pay.

often they come up with crap like You pay for tiler or electrics etc..
you want All the job in the quote so you can use it when they leave..

good luck

I've just turned a bedroom into a bathroom, and it seemed pretty straightforward really. A bit of pipework and a new stack pipe as there was no water upstairs originally, but well within the abilities of yer average plumber.
I was just looking at the corner of an existing large room being converted after a builder had constructed 2 walls creating another room. Subject to appropriate planning permission of course. So simply taking a corner off a large bedroom.

Well you've done the big bit..
cost will be tiles or shower wall..shower wall will be cheaper.
the shower, the plumbing ,is it a electric shower or hot water, combi fed etc as that will be cheaper than having a 10mm cable leccy feed and new leccy unit installed.
new bathroom light for regulations same as fan.
a small extractor fan which will have to be fitted ,works of lighting ring main and easy to fit.
then its just the waste ..and some decor flooring etc
you can pipe to a soil stack and connect to that if theres one ?
So hopefully you dont need a sewer connection and new soil stack.
There may be other costs Do you need a toilet and sink?
Is there a window..frosted pain needed etc
if you can diy the flooring and decor you will save a few quid.

Get a few quotes and see how they compare.
do you know anyone who knows a good plumber..really usefull if you do
