i serviced the above bottom bracket last night as it was on a bike that had been perfectly kept but unridden for 40-odd years.

odd thing, i was lent all manner of bb tools by a club colleague, and none of them fitted. i ended up removing the l/h cup by inserting one peg on the peg spanner and using the axle to lever it around. as the r/h cup would not come out at all (final straw was putting a small scratch on the frame as a result of my efforts), i put the bike on its side, thoroughly cleaned and degreased the bb shell and the cup, gaffa-taped over the hole at the bottom, put grease around the r/s cup and put the bearings back in, followed by more grease, and the axel.

i got the whole thing back together ok (and developed a dislike of cotter pins in the process), but it begged the question of whether it was worth replacing the bb with a more modern c and c bb. or maybe i'll give it another 40 years.

are bb tools for the baylis wiley available anywhere (for sensible money)?
