I've just fitted a new BB to the mountain Bike.

No real problems, except I'm not sure if the non-drive side is tight enough.
Its a cheapo square taper job, and the off-side has a plastic locknut. I've tightened up the drive side, then fitted the locknut.

I've given it a reasonable amount of welly (no torque wrench so going by feel) and it feels tight, but the plastic locknut will not screw all the way in, there are 2 or 3 threads still outside the shell. I'm a little hesitant to really lean on it incase I damage the locknut...

Is this normal? do I have to give it some oomph? or should I leave well enough alone?

yep, perfectly normal. the shimano ones stick out even further. unsettling at first isn't it?

I agree it's perfectly normal to have a bit of thread showing ... What does it ride like is there any noise from the bottom bracket now? Does it rotate freely?
