If i remove my chainset to replace it do I need to fit a new bottom bracket? The current bb is only a few months old, is their life span limited to one fitting?

If the new one fits. there is no problem.

Yup, the bearings need replacing when there is play in the cranks when fitted. If you're planning on riding through winter, I'd probably take the opportunity to put some extra grease in the bearings even if not that old as that will help in crappy weather, but if it's not that old then strictly there's no need. Any particular reason you're replacing the cranks?

Yes, you can reuse your existing bb bearings when you fit a new crank set. You'll need a removal and refitting tool (buy or make them yourself) and some fitting compound or grease on the mating surfaces. Don't forget to clean out the bb surfaces with alcohol or simikar before refitting.
Plenty of how to's videos on YouTube.

I don't intend removing the bb just the chainset as I wish to replace it with the original. So is it jus a matter of taking off the old chainset and inserting the new one?

Yep, should be as long as you are replacing like for like - so if you are using Shimano then all good. Just put some grease on the axle where the bearings will sit and you're good to go - smear a bit around with your finger and that's plenty.
