you (and the hapless victim) have been very unlucky. I've been close to hundreds (or thousands?) of redbacks and have never been bitten. Once got bitten by a garden orb spider, but that was relieved by cortisone cream.

I worked as an offloader (furniture remover) in Sydney for several months. Me and my workmate were lifting an old cupboard out from the shed when I felt a sharp pain in my left hand. Managed to get the load into the van and then almost blacked-out. My mate asked me what was wrong, and he then lifted the cupboard up and saw the spider that had bitten me. I asked what would happen and he said I'd either die, or not. Nobber.

I was youngish, fit and healthy so just felt rough for 2-3 hours and was fed cups of tea and glasses of whisky by the old lady who reckoned it was the best 'medicine' for me.
