A bloke I know was riding on the motorway with his wife on the back when another bike passed him doing stupid speed, next thing he knew was a police car rammed him from behind causing him to break a leg and his wife to break both legs and an arm. Not only that but he was prosecuted and banned for a year and fined over a grand with the police refusing to believe that he wasn't the speeding motorcyclist and as he put it if he went over 70mph his wife would start hitting him in the kidneys

I think the bloke you knew was telling you porkies.

There is no way he would have been convicted just because a copper said it was him speeding. They have had VASCAR for a LONG time, and it would require the evidence from that to get a conviction - which would show the registration of the bike. And would also show the ramming by the coppers.

They might have wiped the footage (if that is possible), to avoid getting themselves done for the almost certainly illegal ramming, but then there would be no evidence of the speeding.

Leeds CC is proposing to extend the pedestrian zones exclusion hours, and ban eBikes during that time with an expectation to get off and push.

The trouble is, there are already restrictions in place that are ignored. I can count on one hand the number of none delivery cyclists I see on an average day in Leeds centre, almost every one I do se.e is a delivery cyclist. And I guarantee every single one of the delivery cyclists will just continue to ignore the law and not get stopped.

Not that it affects me, there's no where to park my bike even if I did cycle into Leeds centre anyway lol
I wondered why there were so few hanging around near the bottom end of Briggate. They all seem to be up around Boots and Tesco Express in recent weeks.

Sounds good, but it's going to need additional powers being given to the councils own officers who are tasked with keeping the area safe. And that's a bit, I can't see any council doing.

I saw someone on a legal trial scooter today and theyn were an adult and riding it on the road!

Then you woke up??

There are no legal scooter schemes round here
but to be fair all the people I have seen on electric scooters recently have been riding very well and causing no problems

I think maybe the initial trend has died down and only people who actually use them properly still use them

maybe

using a scooter to get to the local shop is better than driving there - or getting it delivered

and it extends the range where you start to think "I better just use the car"
But it's then a case of deciding to use an illegal vehicle.

I know the woman, or at least recognise here's living just along the road.

She does not have a car, and most other times I see her walking. These scooter users are almost universally pedestrians who have decided its too much effort to walk, and today she joined them.

Car drivers aren't having an attack of the environmental conscience and parking their tin boxes up in favour of an scooter ride. Thats simply not happening. The guff the scooter companies are trotting out about millions of car journeys saved is tripe. The theory is nice, but the reality has failed to materialise.

That does see to be true
There are a fair few I see when the local factories (etc) start and finish and it certainly seems to be a good way for them to get to work

but I also doubt they would drive otherwise

I reckon they would mostly ride a normal bike if e-scooter and ebikes didn;t exist

Just to be awkward - I do use my ebike to go to Tesco in summer - ratehr than drive
it is that bit too far to walk

so it does happen - just very very rarely!

Unless school kids have suddenly become eligible to drive cars but have chosen to (illegally) ride the hire scooters and bikes around here the number of car journeys saved is probably small enough to count on the fingers of one hand.

PS: Yes, I know that some school kids will be old enough to drive but hopefully you will get me meaning ^_^

COuple of articles from Road.cc that I saw today

First about Police tackling illegal ebikes

https://road.cc/news/cycling-live-b...with police to discuss modified e-motorbikes

Hope they know about old pre-2016 ebikes that allowed a Throttle
and the concept of DVLA "single vehicle authorisation for one as well
but they are a very small minority so great if they do it properly

and James May making sense about "Bike breaking the speed limit"

https://road.cc/news/very-few-peopl...limit-on-a-bike-says-james-may#comment-921783

I do wish the responsible media would stop calling that lawyer bloke Mr Loophole. The Daily Mail started that, and have yet to produce any evidence that his hit rate for technical defence tactics are any better than the average. Hes a self aggrandising eejut.

Never liked him
Apart from anything else his reputation says he is good at getting people who are guilty off scot-free
by using things that only someone who can afford to pay an expensive lawyer can do

which is hardly a moral high ground of any kind
