The usual "cycling is very dangerous" bollocks message.

Good interview with Chris Boardman, and his comment on helmets and hi-vis "was wear them if it makes you feel safe, if people are being shot in the streets you don't tell them to wear bullet proof vests you find out why they are being shot and fix the problem" Then he talked about presumed liability

Well done, Mr Boardman! Absolutely right. I wonder if anyone will listen though? Surely, we are on the verge of a massive change in this country. Fuel prices are going through the roof, cyclists are the new footballers, cycling is the new golf, politicians realise there is support to be had be pretending to like cycling. Maybe, just maybe we can get some real changes effected now. I don't mean multi-million pound cycle paths that don't go where anyone needs them to, just some adjustments to the current road network to make it even safer.

I would be happy if they just put some traffic police on the streets to catch errant road users.
Likewise! I see you're from Swindon. Me too!! My post above referred to the waste of money that is the upgrade to the Western Flyer. When I was talking to one of the guys about it I said they could probably spend the money better on things like putting ASLs at Kingsdown Crossroads or moving that roundabout at the Crown so the bus/cycle lane is actually an exit on it and things like that.

What's your commute?

Indeed, he put his (valid) points across very well.

The council have a history of wasting money on bad cycling infrastructure.
Not a great fan of ASL's but then I am confident/experinced enough to sit in primary with the rest of traffic, although ASL's are extremely rare in Swindon.
More bus/cycle lanes and some enforcement would be nice, resurfacing the bus lanes as that red top layer is very patchy.

As I live virtually next to work(3km) I take an extended route, from the town centre to west Swindon usually via Badbury/Chiseldon/Wroughton with variations on the route to keep it interesting such as riding across the M4 from Liddington(if my legs are not tired:tongue: ) with a shorter extended route going home.

Zen & the Art of cycling safety.

Always had a lot of time for Chris Boardman, he had a good pro career and has a Zen-like quietness about him which some other cycling heroes would do well to emulate.

On BBC Breakfast this morning he was talking some of the best sense on cycling safety that I have heard in a long long time.

Quite coincidentally, I was watching a Boardman interview earlier and had the same thought. Such a calm, self-possessed man. I suppose you have to be when you've got six kids!

There seems to be a lot of bias in this country (against cycling) like when I tell the petrol heads at work they may like cycling they look horrified.
