The OP quite reasonably describes this as 'minority interest' for a largely UK audience.

But there are huge numbers in parts of America.

I recall one year when Michael Jackson was selling millions of CDs around the world, he was outsold by US country artist Garth Brooks, and most of Brooks' sales were from just a few states in America.

Brooks has six albums in this Billboard top 10 all time greatest country sellers list:

Garth Brooks!? As the legend Dale Watson sang 'that's country my ass'.
I saw her on this tour - deeply uncool at the time, but really good, with an amazingly talented band.

I don't really like ELH as the main vocalist, I think she's better as a backing singer. Rodney Crowell was in The Hot Band, he's first rate!

Oh yeah and that song she's singing is by the very wonderful Townes Van Zandt, Mrs 3BM patted him in the head once, don't ask.
And a quick heads-up - it's Nashville Night on BBC4 tonight, with a documentary on how Nashville became capital of Country, Country Queens at the BBC, and, erm, John Denver.
Already had that set to tape, watched it for an hour, they had some good folks on too, good George Jones bit, great footage of him being arrested for DUI and kicking out at a photographer :becool: - not that I condone that behaviour.
