Was I the only one that got caught out by BBC changing from DVB-s to DVB-s2 on Monday? I thought my Freesat box had broke, googled it and got nothing. Googled it again last night and the issue had started to pop up on forums. Just needs a Freesat re-tune to pick them up again.

Is that why I've suddenly started getting narrative on my BBC1 HD broadcasts of Eastenders (for Mrs SD)! Will retune tonight to see if that fixes it.

My Humax HDR just did it on it's own, I was at least expecting to get a popup saying channels had been changed, but no.

No my fairly new (about 2 months old) Humax box just said "Bad channel or poor signal". I am using a Sky dish so that may be part of it.

I've not seen anything from the Beeb either and I usually watch the switchover at 6am from BBC News to BBC1 where they stick the boring stuff like how to pay your license fee on time!

My Foxsat HDR did it automatically, but I had to reset the Elgato sat receiver manually. I bet there are countless thousands of people affected who haven't got a clue what's gone wrong. The Beeb should have announced it long ago and had a few alerts showing on the relevant channels in the last three or four weeks. (Maybe they did but I've never seen any).

They announced it at the end of last week. There wasn't any notice given for political reasons.

Why was that then?

Just past history. It used to drive the BBC wild with rage when people like me would ask them politely if they could have a road map for going to S2 and a few other things. Ever since they changed the encoders for BBC HD they have had this idea that everyone is out to get them. They tend to be very tight lipped or not comment on changes these days as they think it'll generate complaints by merely making people more aware of something than they would have been. It would also be seen as a major climb down, as they only said a while back they'd like to go to S2, before that, nothing. I don't think it's a great policy as we saw when they monkeyed around with muxB on freeview and got rid of an interactive slot.

The BBC would argue (perhaps slightly unconvincingly) that they only have commitments to freesat users (which are ALL able to use DVB-S2) in terms of HD. They are aware of the other FTA boxes that likely aren't S2 in quite a few cases and plenty of video cards in PCs that are not S2. The freesat boxes were supposed to be fine if left in standby.

I'm happy it's S2, but they left it so late, that it may barely matter any more what with new capacity on the horizon.
