"Later today Wales will find out the implications of the new budget. What will be the effect on education and the NHS, blah, blah..."

WHY NOT JUST WAIT UNTIL THE BUDGET IS ANNOUNCED and tell us all then. It is a NON-NEWS item to tell us that there will be news later today.

And breathe...

Problem with having continuous news channels - it increases the amount of time to fill with speculation. It could be argued that speculation can actually shape subsequent events and affect people's reactions to them, not always for the better, but speculation about a budget isn't going to change anything at this stage.

Personally, I agree with you. I don't watch this kind of stuff. It's going to be exactly the same over the royal wedding - endless speculation for months, the vast majority of which will be wrong. I don't mind watching a bit of scene-setting for news events like budgets, but it's the actual event and the implications of it afterwards that make the news.

I saw a points of view clip of someone arguing the same thing. They were complaining about how so much of reports on BBC News is pure speculation, and they should wait until there is ACTUAL news before reporting on it! I found myself quite in agreement. I was watching C4 news last night and they kept going back to the guy in the airport saying "yes we believe the plane carrying those two somalian hostages has just touched down" SO WHAT?!? When you've actually got some footage of them walking out and saying hello report back to us until then **** off!

I don't want to see them unemployed, but feel their time and skills could be used in more productive work.

Maybe while they're on location all stood around waiting to got on camera , outside a supermarket for example - to remind us what one looks like!, they could do something useful like sweep the street or pick up dog shoot.

And why have a reporter, live from Dublin or whatever, telling us through a delayed/crackling feed nothing other than what we already know?

There are so many interesting events, issues and incidents taking place everywhere both here and in the rest of the world. How do they manage to make the news so boring and repetitive?

What really gets me tutting is when the newsreader says something like "Detective Inspector Smith of the Hampshire police force said the police do not have enough evidence" before cutting briefly to Detective Inspector Smith of the Hampshire police force who says "The police do not have enough evidence".

And we're here as you can see, live, waiting for the speech to begin... the speech, of course, much awaited by everyone... we're all here waiting to hear what will be said... I think it's no exaggeration to say that there's a lot of people here and a lot of people interested in what's going to be said when he emerges through that door... as you can see, the door is at the moment closed, though it did open briefly earlier - ooh, about 5 to 6 minutes ago, I should say... it's, err, it's quite a big door, as you can see... I should imagine it takes quite a bit of opening... my auntie's house has a door that big and you really have to watch it if the wind gets up... not surprising really that they keep it closed most of the time... I should imagine it would get very drafty if it was left open for any length of time... not to mention the possibility of a stray cat wandering in...

Well said !!!

On the same sort of theme, just exactly WHO determines what news items are actually broadcast on TV ?

Most channels report exactly the same items at the same time and almost exactly in the same running order. That can't just be coincidence can it ?

Is there some kind of central propaganda news machine that churns out the stories ?

Either way, I find that the majority of 'news' is irrelevant and of little or no interest to most of us.

Worse still are the advance press releases of the budget or 'key-note speeches' and the like, so that we know in advance precisely what the contents are so why bother giving the TV coverage of the actual speeches at all, when all we need to do is read and inwardly digest the content calmly and methodically in our own time!
